One of the most common questions from visitors is simple: can I rent a car in Dubai with the driving licence from my country? The answer depends on where your licence was issued and whether you are a visitor or a UAE resident.
Can tourists rent a car in Dubai with their home licence?
Visitors from many countries — for example the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, most European countries and the GCC countries — can usually drive a rental car in the UAE with their valid home licence. Visitors from other countries usually need an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence. The official list is set by the UAE authorities and can change, so always check with the rental company before you travel.
Can I rent a car in Dubai with an Indian driving licence?
Visitors with an Indian driving licence usually need an International Driving Permit as well as their Indian licence. Get the IDP in India before you travel — it cannot normally be issued in the UAE. Bring your passport, your Indian licence and the IDP when you collect the car.
Can I rent a car with a Pakistani driving licence?
Visitors with a Pakistani driving licence also usually need an International Driving Permit together with their Pakistani licence. As with any licence, confirm the exact requirement with the rental company on WhatsApp before you book.
Can I rent a car with a UK driving licence?
Yes — visitors with a valid UK driving licence can usually rent and drive a car in the UAE without an International Driving Permit. Bring your passport and your photocard licence.
What do UAE residents need?
Once you hold a UAE residence visa, you need a UAE driving licence to drive in the country — a foreign licence is no longer enough. Some nationalities can convert their home licence into a UAE licence; others must take UAE driving lessons and tests. Rental companies will ask for your UAE licence and Emirates ID.
What other requirements do rental companies have?
- A minimum driver age — often 21 or older, sometimes higher for luxury and sports cars. Each car page on ClicknDrive shows its minimum age.
- A licence held for a minimum time, often at least one year.
- Some companies rent without a security deposit, while others take a refundable deposit, returned according to the company's policy.
Tips before you travel
- Check your licence's expiry date.
- Get your International Driving Permit at home if you need one.
- Send copies of your documents to the rental company on WhatsApp so they can confirm everything before you arrive.
