Salik Tolls and Rental Cars in Dubai: What You Pay and How
Driving a rental car in Dubai means passing Salik toll gates. Learn how Salik works with rental cars, how the charges reach you, and how tolls work in Abu Dhabi too.

Salik is Dubai's road toll system. If you drive a rental car in Dubai, you will almost certainly pass a Salik gate — on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Maktoum Bridge, Al Garhoud Bridge and other main roads. Here is what that means for your rental.
What is Salik?
Salik is an automatic toll system. There are no booths and you never stop: a tag on the windscreen is read when you drive under a gate, and the toll is charged to the car's Salik account. Every rental car in Dubai already has a Salik tag.
How much is a Salik toll?
The toll is charged each time you pass a gate. Dubai has introduced different prices for busy and quiet times of the day, so the amount can depend on when you drive. Check the current prices on the official Salik website before your trip.
How do I pay Salik in a rental car?
You do not pay at the gate. The rental company pays the toll through the car's Salik account and then charges it to you — usually when you return the car or from your deposit, if the company took one. Some companies also add a small service fee per crossing. Ask the company on WhatsApp how they charge Salik before you book.
Are there tolls in Abu Dhabi too?
Yes. Abu Dhabi has its own toll system called Darb, with gates on the main bridges into Abu Dhabi island. Tolls apply at busy times on working days. As with Salik, the rental company usually charges you after the rental.
How can I keep toll costs down?
- Plan your route — some trips can avoid toll gates with only a few extra minutes.
- Drive at quieter times when tolls may be lower.
- Ask the company how it charges tolls and whether there is a service fee.
What about traffic fines?
Speed and parking fines are linked to the car, so the rental company receives them and charges them to the driver — often with an admin fee. Drive within the speed limits and pay for parking to avoid surprises.
