Salik and Traffic Fines in Dubai: Rental Car Guide
Salik tolls and traffic fines in Dubai explained for rental car drivers: toll prices and peak hours, how companies charge them and how to check your fines.

If you rent a car in Dubai, two costs come on top of the rental price: Salik road tolls and any traffic fines. Neither is complicated once you know how it works. Salik is Dubai's electronic toll system, the rental company receives every toll and fine linked to its car, and you pay them back at the end of the rental. This guide explains Salik prices and times, how rental companies charge tolls and fines, and the simple habits that keep your final bill low.
What Is Salik in Dubai
Salik means "clear" or "open" in Arabic, and that is exactly how it works: there are no barriers and no booths. Toll gates stand over some of Dubai's busiest roads, and a small sticker tag on the windscreen is read automatically as you drive under a gate. The toll is taken from the Salik account linked to the car, so you never stop, slow down or pay at the roadside.
Salik is run by Salik Company PJSC on behalf of Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Today the network has 10 gates on main roads such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Al Garhoud and Al Maktoum bridges, the Airport Tunnel and the Al Mamzar area. The two newest gates, Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road and Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road, started working in November 2024. You can see the current list of gates on the official Salik website.
Salik Prices and Peak Hours
Since 31 January 2025 Salik has used variable pricing, so the toll depends on the time of day. The RTA announced the new system together with new parking tariffs (WAM, the UAE's official news agency), and Salik published the approved schedule in its official filing with the Dubai Financial Market:
- Peak hours on weekdays, 6 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 8 pm: AED 6 per gate crossing
- Off-peak on weekdays, 10 am to 4 pm and 8 pm to 1 am: AED 4 per crossing
- 1 am to 6 am: free
- Sundays: AED 4 all day, except on public holidays and during major events
During Ramadan the peak hours are different. Prices and times can change, so always check today's rates, including any taxes, on the Salik website before a long drive.
How Salik Works on a Rental Car
Every rental car in Dubai already has a Salik tag, so you don't need to buy or activate anything. The tolls are charged to the rental company's account, and the company adds them to your bill, usually at the end of the rental or when it charges your deposit or card.
Most companies charge the toll itself, and some add a small service fee for each crossing. Ask about this before you sign, and ask how the tolls will be shown on your final invoice. A clear company will list each crossing with its date and time.
If you rent by the week or the month, tolls add up quickly. Driving twice a day under one gate at peak time is AED 12 a day, which is more than AED 300 over a month. When you compare a monthly car rental in Dubai, think about your daily route, not only the monthly price.
Traffic Fines on a Rental Car
Dubai has many speed and red-light cameras, and fines are sent to the car's owner, which is the rental company. The company then charges the fine to the person who rented the car at that time, often with an administration fee. Fines can appear in the system days or even weeks after the date, so a fine may reach you after you have returned the car.
The most common fines on rental cars are:
- Speeding: limits are shown on signs, and cameras are everywhere on main roads
- Running a red light or stopping on the yellow box at a junction
- Using a mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seat belt
- Parking without paying, or parking where it is not allowed
- Not leaving enough distance from the car in front
The amounts and the rules are set by the authorities and can change. For the current list, use the official Dubai Police and RTA websites or their apps.
How to Check Your Traffic Fines
You can check fines on a car yourself through the Dubai Police website or app and the RTA website or app, for example with the car's plate number. Ask the rental company for the plate number and the emirate on the plate at handover and keep a photo of it.
If the company charges you a fine, it is fair to ask for proof: the date, time, place and type of violation, as shown in the official record. This also helps if a fine reaches you that you think belongs to the next driver.
Paid Parking in Dubai
Most busy areas in Dubai use paid public parking. Signs show the zone number and the hours when you must pay. You can usually pay at the machine or with an app or SMS. Parking without paying is one of the easiest fines to get in a rental car, so check the sign every time you park. Malls, hotels and many residential buildings have their own parking with their own rules.
Tolls Outside Dubai
Salik only covers Dubai. Abu Dhabi has its own toll system, called Darb, which charges at peak hours on working days. Sharjah and the northern emirates have no road tolls at the time of writing. If you plan a trip to Abu Dhabi, ask the rental company how Darb tolls on their car are handled, because the system is different from Salik.
Simple Ways to Keep Tolls and Fines Low
- Plan longer trips outside peak hours: the same gate costs AED 4 at 11 am and AED 6 at 8 am on a weekday
- Use navigation apps that show toll gates, and choose a route without them when time allows
- Keep to the speed limit and use cruise control on highways
- Pay for parking every time, and set a reminder before it runs out
- Take photos of the car, the fuel level and the odometer at pickup and return
- Keep the rental contract until the deposit is back and no fines are left
Many companies on ClicknDrive can deliver the car to your door, which saves you a drive across a toll gate at the start and end of the rental.
Deposits, Tolls and Fines
Some rental companies rent without a security deposit, while others take a refundable deposit. When a company takes a deposit, it is partly there to cover tolls and fines that arrive after the car is returned. When the deposit comes back depends on each company's policy, so ask before you rent. If you prefer not to leave a deposit, look at the cars you can rent with no deposit in Dubai and check how that company bills tolls and fines instead.
Compare Rental Cars in Dubai
Every car on ClicknDrive shows its real price per day, week and month, the kilometres included, the deposit and whether the company delivers. Browse all cars in Our Fleet, contact the company on WhatsApp or by phone and ask how they charge Salik and fines before you book. There are no booking fees and no online payment.
How much is Salik in Dubai?
Salik costs AED 6 per gate crossing at peak times on weekdays (6 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 8 pm), AED 4 at other times and on Sundays, and nothing between 1 am and 6 am. The schedule is different in Ramadan and can change, so check the official Salik website for today's prices.
Who pays Salik on a rental car in Dubai?
The driver pays. The rental car already has a Salik tag, the tolls are charged to the rental company's account, and the company adds them to your bill. Some companies add a small service fee per crossing, so ask before you rent.
How do I know if I got a traffic fine in a rental car?
The rental company is told about every fine on its car and will contact you. You can also check fines yourself on the Dubai Police and RTA websites or apps, for example with the car's plate number. Fines can appear days or weeks after the date.
Can a traffic fine be taken from my security deposit?
If the company took a deposit, it may use it for tolls and fines that arrive after you return the car, depending on its policy. Ask the company how long it keeps the deposit and ask for proof of any fine it charges.
Is Salik free at night?
Yes. Driving under a Salik gate between 1 am and 6 am is free under the current schedule. Check the Salik website during Ramadan and on public holidays, when the times can be different.
